How can we help people reduce their stress levels and discover the benefits to spending time in nature?

Zen Zones

The World Health Organization declared stress to be “the health epidemic of the 21st century” and it poses serious threats to individuals and society. Stress can be a culprit for multiple health problems: cardiac disease and stroke, as well as high blood pressure, and immune and circulatory complications. It affects our bodies, minds and society at large. Scientific research shows that time spent in nature can help reduce stress levels. In fact, just being exposed to images and sounds of nature can have positive effects on the body and mind. Therefore, we propose creating “human recharge zones” in the midst of bustling urban environments. Both artistic and scientific, this project builds on Montreal’s strengths in creativity, innovation, technology, education and science.

We will provide an immersive experience using sound, imagery, lighting, elements from the natural world (plants, moss, trees, etc.), and objects to create a relaxing oasis in the midst of bustling urban surroundings. Our approach offers the public a tangible sensorial experience, which aims to awaken their connection to nature while reducing stress levels. This project also serves as a gateway for locals and visitors to discover green spaces in Montreal and Quebec.

If we reduce stress levels in society by focusing on preventive measures, we can not only improve the well-being of our citizens, but also save millions of dollars spent each year to fight physical and psychological diseases caused by stress. Our goal is to help educate citizens about the link between stress reduction and time spent in nature.

This concept was chosen by the program “Je fais Montréal” in 2018, a program created by the city of Montréal. However, it must be adapted to the current COVID-19 reality.
